Increasing numbers of young people in rural districts of South Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are enrolled in secondary education. However, in some schools, the quality of teaching in critical subjects such as English, mathematics and science is low. Also, teaching posts for these subjects are often vacant or filled by teachers without relevant expertise. Consequently, learning outcomes in secondary grades are low.

RADEC identifies community-based education entrepreneurs and provides them with resources to set up portable, digital ‘classrooms’ where young people meet to study after school. Resources include a Raspberry Pi-embedded computer with accessories, a multimedia pico-projector or LED TV, keyboard / mouse, and a few infrared clicker dongles to record student responses. Digital educational content for several grades and subjects is stored on the computer. The content is secure and cannot be copied from the Raspberry Pi. The complete setup can be powered by a battery power bank and can run without electricity for 2 to 3 hours. The ‘edupreneurs’ charge a fee for after-school tuition in the afternoon which is lower than conventional tuition fees.
